The "Given the Opportunity" Awards began in Morgan County, Alabama in 1993. This process was based on a national program created by the National Crime Prevention Council. Youth groups, elementary through high school, were asked to design and carry out projects, which would make a positive difference in the community. Project applications are submitted and reviewed by a panel of local judges. Youth groups are awarded grants to implement the projects. Thousands of people have been impacted by the GTO Projects. In 1997 a second Prevention Grant Division was created. The purpose of these grants is to place emphasis on: the prevention of drinking and driving, the promotion of seat belt usage, and the prevention of tobacco usage.
This year there are 15 grants being awarded for a total of $2,622.76
Since 1993, 383 grants have been award totaling $50,081.76
